ipsy Glam Bag Review: November 2018

November is here! This month’s bag was a super cute purple with black hearts. Check out the 5 products I got inside!

LOCK IT Waterproof Pencil Eyeliner in “Pearl Brown”

from L.O.C.K. Color

We know I’m a sucker for liquid liner, so that’s one drawback with this one, but the gel formula holds up nicely all day long. While I appreciate that I don’t need a sharpener for this pencil because it twists, I don’t like the fact that it’s not very precise. The color is absolutely gorgeous, though! Depending on the color of your eyeshadow, it reads as a deep copper or as a bronze with a hint of metallic olive. It’s great for fall.

My Rating: 3/5

Microfiber Dewdrop Sponge

from Juno & Co.

I haven’t been using a lot of liquid foundation lately, but I wanted to give this sponge an honest try, so I set my Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten aside. I really wanted to like this sponge, but I couldn’t. The velvety texture didn’t give me anything close to an airbrush finish. I had to go back over with a regular sponge to smooth things out. It didn’t do much better on my concealer, either. On top of all that, the texture made it difficult to clean. Pass.

My Rating: 1/5

Always On Liquid Lipstick in “Out Loud”

from Smashbox Cosmetics

Photo of sample size Always On Liquid Lipstick in "Out Loud" from Smashbox Cosmetics
$24 for .13 fl. oz.; Smashbox Cosmetics

This color is absolutely perfect for fall! It’s a deep orange that ipsy claims is universally flattering. I usually find Smashbox’s formula to be a little drying (I like Too Faced’s Liquid Matte better,) but I didn’t experience that this time, and the color payoff is really nice. It never became truly transfer-proof, but it managed to last a whole work day without needing to touch up.

My Rating: 4/5

Strictly Curls Miracle Treatment

from Marc Anthony True Professional

Photo of Strictly Curls Perfect Curl Miracle Treatment from Marc Anthony True Professional
$17.21 for (6) 1.01 fl. oz. jars; Amazon

I wasn’t super impressed with how it felt after blow-drying when I used this product the first time; I don’t think I used enough of it. The second time, though, my hair felt much smoother and softer. To be fair, I don’t have curly hair. It’s more randomly wavy. Have any of my curly haired gals tried it? What did you think?

My Rating: 4/5

Extraordinary Translucent Setting Powder

from Ciaté London

Just like my highlighter overload lately, I’m feeling a bit of a translucent powder overload from my beauty subscriptions. This one didn’t do anything to wow me. The jar size is so tiny, and it left my skin feeling a bit dry in some areas. It has a very fine consistency, so it did a decent job under my eyes to set my concealer, but it didn’t brighten my eyes like my Becca powder does.

My Rating: 2/5

This month’s bag had an average rating of 3.5. How did your beauty subscriptions stack up this month? Let me know in the comments!

Love,

Sarah xoxo

ipsy Glam Bag Review: July 2018

Hey, y’all!

Summer isn’t over yet, and this month’s super cute shimmery aqua bag is perfect for taking to the pool. The theme around this month’s products was all about keeping your skin and hair healthy and happy, in spite of all the sun, sand, salt, and chlorine. I loved that there were so many waterproof products you could get in your bag. Look at what I got!

Studio Skin Concealer in “Light”

from Smashbox Cosmetics

Photo of Studio Skin 24 Hour Waterproof Concealer in "Light" from Smashbox Cosmetics
$25 for .08 fl. oz.; Smashbox Cosmetics

It’s waterproof, hydrating, cruelty-free, oil-free, and has a matte finish. What’s not to love? It does a great job of staying put all day, even through a sweaty gym session. Not to mention, hooray for getting a full-size item! My only complaint is that it doesn’t have full enough coverage to completely conceal the dark circles under my eyes, so I’m still using my Shape Tape for that.

My Rating: 4/5

City Chic Eyeshadow in “Skinny Latte”

from City Color Cosmetics

Photo of City Chic Eye Shadow in "Skinny Latte" from City Color Cosmetics
$3.99; City Color Cosmetics

I’ve gotten City Color Cosmetics eyeshadows from ipsy before, and I love them! The formula has a smooth application with no fallout, plus there’s the great pigmentation, huge pan size, and really affordable price point. This color caught me by surprise because I thought it would be a shimmery light taupe that I could use as an all-over color when I’m low on time. It ended up coming out a LOT lighter and WAY more shimmery than I anticipated. I can basically only use it as a highlighting shade without looking like I just walked out of an early 2000s music video. Lesson learned.

My Rating: 4/5

Pure Skin Face Cleanser

from First Aid Beauty

Photo of sample size Pure Skin Face Cleanser from First Aid Beauty
$10 for 2 oz.; First Aid Beauty

I got this cleanser in my glam bag a few months ago and liked it. It’s got antioxidants to protect my skin, it’s fragrance-free, and it’s pH balanced to maintain skin’s natural acidity. Most importantly, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight and dry after I use it. This is perfect to have in my travel bag!

My Rating: 4/5

Oasis Ultra Hydrating Cream

from H2O+ Beauty

Photo of sample size Oasis Ultra Hydrating Cream from H2O+ Beauty
$42 for 1.7 fl. oz.; H2O+ Beauty

This water-gel cream moisturizer feels sooooo nice–I wish the sample was bigger! It has water lily extract to condition my skin and illuminating pigments to give it a subtle glow. I can feel a difference in my skin’s moisture level after using this. I love this product, but I probably won’t spring for a full-size jar.

My Rating: 5/5

I-Line 24-7 Eyeliner in “Whiskey”

from Beauty For Real

Photo of I-Line 24-7 Eyeliner in "Whiskey" from Beaty for Real
$14; Beauty For Real

This is a brand I’d never heard of before, so I was interested to try this gel eyeliner out. It’s waterproof, made with Vitamin E, and cruelty-free! The fact that it’s retractable makes it convenient, but it also means you can’t get a super tight, defined line. The formula is fine for sensitive skin, if that’s a concern, and this shade is a lovely warm brown with a subtle shimmer. It’s nice to be able to change it up from black to something else that I can still wear to work. 🙂

My Rating: 4/5

This month’s bag had an average rating of 4.2–the highest one of 2018 so far! How many of these products have you tried?

Any new favs in your July beauty subscription(s)? Tell me all about ’em!

Sarah xoxo

Ulta 21 Days of Beauty March 2018 Pt. 2

Hey y’all!

I noticed that I’m not buying as many products from 21 Days of Beauty as I did last time. I think it’s partly because I’ve tried more products and brands than I had 6 months ago and partly because I’m better stocked and don’t want anything to go to waste. I had hoped to pick up the Marvelous Mauves Eyeshadow Palette from Dose of Colors on April 1st, but apparently I slept in too late, and they sold out. Whoops! It looks like this will just send up being a 4-part series of posts instead of 5. Let’s jump into part 2!

Samples

I ordered online again, so I chose the Skincare Sampler this time.

Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer

from Stila Cosmetics

Photo of Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer sample from Stila Cosmetics
$40; Stila Cosmetics

The full-size product consists of 1 fl. oz. of the foundation and .04 oz. of refillable full-coverage cream concealer under the cap. This sample came with 4 shades of foundation (no concealer):

  • Fair 2 (Warm undertones)
  • Light 3 (Golden undertones)
  • Buff 7 (Warm undertones)
  • Tan 13 (Golden undertones)

My skin has neutral undertones, so I’d most likely be a match for Porcelain 0 or Hue 5, depending on how tanned I was. You can find your match here. Fair 2 worked pretty well for me.

The texture was kind of thick and made me a little nervous at first, but it held up really well over the course of the day. Even after a 12 hour day plus a workout, it wasn’t showing any signs of breaking up. Not sure if I’d purchase full-size because it felt a little heavy, yet I had to layer it on quite a bit to build up coverage. It’s also a bit pricey for me, but I would be curious to see how my supposed color match looks on me.

Chia Seed Oil Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner

from Hask Beauty

Photo of Chia Seed Oil Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner sample from Hask Beauty

I’m not really sure what shampoo and conditioner have to do with skincare, but I digress… It turns out chia seeds are just as good for your hair as they are for the rest of you, thanks to the proteins, antioxidants, calcium, and omega-3s inside.

You can’t buy directly from the Hask website at this time, so it directed me to Ulta’s website, but when I looked, the only Chia Seed Oil product I could find was dry shampoo. Maybe this shampoo and conditioner are so new that they haven’t rolled out yet? Have you tried the dry shampoo? I’m curious what you think of it.

The shampoo and conditioner were ok; they smelled nice without being overbearing. They gave my hair volume but left it feeling a little coarser than normal after blow-drying, even after using all my normal styling products. I probably wouldn’t purchase this for my hair (if I could even find out where to purchase it!)

Beauty Steals

Photo Finish Primer Water Set & Refresh Spray

from Smashbox Cosmetics

Photo of Photo Finish Primer Water Set & Refresh Spray from Smashbox Cosmetics
$32 for 3.9 fl. oz.; Smashbox Cosmetics

I love my current primer and my current setting spray, so I was mainly curious to try this out as a makeup refresher during the day. It was one of the Beauty Steals on March 21st, so I got it for half price! I love, love, loved it! The scent was very fresh and not too strong; I loved how hydrated my skin felt and how quickly it absorbed the product. I can’t decide if I like Too Faced’s Hangover 3-in-1 Setting Spray better. I’ll get back to you on that one…

Pérsona Identity Palette

from Pérsona Cosmetics

Photo of the Identity Eyeshadow Palette from Persona Cosmetics
$32; Pérsona Cosmetics

This palette had high reviews, and it was another Beauty Steal on March 21st, so it was half price. Why not give it a shot? These shades were created with brown eyes in mind (mine are hazel), but they’ll work with any eye color.

The palette has 6 shimmer shades:

  • Sassy
  • Goal Digger
  • Seductive
  • Bombshell
  • Goddess
  • Bossy

And 6 matte shades:

  • Humble
  • Charming
  • Maverick
  • Audacious
  • Chic
  • Fearless

When I first swatched these with my fingers, they were sooooo buttery smooth. I couldn’t wait to try them on my lids! They went on just as smoothly with brushes, and the pigmentation was to die for! To test out some of the shimmer shades, I used Goddess as my transition shade, Bossy to deepen, Goal Digger on my lids, and Sassy to highlight. I was so distracted by the beauty of these colors that I completely forgot to put on eyeliner! To test out some matte shades, I put a look together consisting of Maverick for transition, Fearless to deepen, Chic on my eyelids, and Humble to highlight. The matte formula was just as great as the shimmer. So far, I love them all!

This was the only eyeshadow palette I saw on the Pérsona website, but I can’t wait to see what else they come out with! It’s an excellent product, cruelty-free, and even made in the USA. Definitely a brand to keep an eye out for in the future!
